OTRO ROLLO, October 2000.
with Adal Ramones
-THE TAPE BEGINS IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTRODUCTION BEING MADE BY MAURICIO
AND ANOTHER OF ADAL'S ASSISTANTS-
ASSISTANT: "
. .he dances fantastically
..
MAURICIO: Wonderfully!
ASSISTANT: He's recorded a great number of albums; he's very successful;
he's Puerto Rican
..
MAURICIO:
.he's a movie star, besides!
ASSISTANT: He's a movie star; he's made telenovelas; he's done everything;
and most of all, he's
very well liked, the world over! Presenting
..
-THE ASSISTANT AND MAURICIO IN UNISON-
"CHAYANNE."
-THE AUDIENCE, WHO HAD BEEN IMPATIENTLY SHOUTING SINCE THE BEGINNING
OF
THE INTRODUCTION, NOW GOES COMPLETELY WILD. THE THEME OF BOOM
BOOM BEGINS PLAYING. THE SPOTLIGHT IS DIRECTED TOWARDS THE DOOR AT
TOP OF THE STAIRS, AND CHAYANNE APPEARS. HE LOOKS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.
HE'S WEARING BLACK LEATHER PANTS, A BLACK SEE-THRU LONG SLEEVED SHIRT
AND A SEE-THRU BLACK UNDERSHIRT. HE COMES DOWN THE STEPS AND GREETS THE
ASSISTANT-
ASSISTANT: Here's CHAYANNE! Let's watch him, here in OTRO ROLLO!
-CHAYANNE SINGS AND DANCES TO BOOM-BOOM. AFTER THE SONG, ADAL
APPROACHES CHAYANNE AND THEY SHAKE HANDS AND EMBRACE. THE
AUDIENCE IS FRANTICALLY RESPONDING TO CHAYANNE'S BEAUTIFUL AND
ENERGETIC PERFORMANCE-
ADAL: Ladies and gentlemen
..CHAYANNE!
-CHAYANNE SENDS A KISS TOWARDS THE AUDIENCE-
ADAL: Old man! My dearest Chayanne, thank you! Thank you for coming to
OTRO ROLLO first!
-CHAYANNE, STILL BREATHLESS AFTER THE PERFORMANCE, FACES THE CAMERA AND
ADDRESSES THE PUBLIC-
CHAYANNE: No
.first of all, I want to thank you, Adal, for giving
me the opportunity of thanking
México for all the affection and all the love they've given me.
And I want to tell you that I'm Adal's fan!
I wouldn't do that jump you did in the water!
ADAL: No! But you do other things I can't do! -ADAL SHAKES HIS HIPS-
-ADAL, FACING THE CAMERA-
ADAL: CHAYANNE is here with us! He'll chat and sing for us, live! CHAYANNE!
-CHAYANNE AND ADAL EMBRACE ONE MORE TIME. CHAYANNE BLOWS ANOTHER
KISS TOWARDS THE AUDIENCE. GOING INTO A COMMERCIAL BREAK, THE
ANNOUNCER CAN BE HEARD MAKING THE FOLLOWING COMMENT-
ANNOUNCER: "That's right! After this short break, let me tell you
that we'll have more of CHAYANNE;
and afterwards, CHAYANNE; and all night, CHAYANNE! Live! Stay with us!"
-BACK FROM THE COMMERCIAL BREAK- CHAYANNE IS SITTING FACING THE
AUDIENCE. ADAL IS SITTING TO HIS RIGHT, IN A SEMI-CIRCLE-
ADAL: CHAYAAANNE!
-ANOTHER KISS FROM CHAYANNE TO THE AUDIENCE-
ADAL: Chayanne, its been three years since your first visit to
OTRO ROLLO!
CHAYANNE: I remember!
ADAL: Three years because
.I remember
...how old is your baby?
How old is Lorenzo?
CHAYANNE: Lorenzito is three years old.
ADAL: Three years! It was before Lorenzito was born.
CHAYANNE: Yes, it was before Lorenzo was born, so it must be three and
a half or four years ago.
ADAL: Three and a half or four years since CHAYANNE has visited OTRO ROLLO.
CHAYANNE: Yes!
ADAL: And in those three and half years, you've grown
..I mean, back
then you were already extremely popular and one doesn't think there's
room for more
.and there is always room for more, still!
CHAYANNE: There's always room for more. There are always new things to
do. That's what we
were talking about, off stage. We were talking about a video I made with
Milton Yiu (?), may he rest in peace; the video of CHAYANNE ES MI NOMBRE,
CHAYANNE ES MI NOMBRE. I was telling
a person of your staff
.she's a producer
..
ADAL: Rocío, the performance coordinator.
CHAYANNE: Rocío! I was telling her that if we compared CHAYANNE
ES MI NOMBRE with BOOM BOOM, we'll notice several differences!
ADAL: What are those differences?
CHAYANNE: There are a lot of them! I wore a loincloth then! Now I'm wearing
clothes! That's one
difference!
ADAL: But I think the girls would like to see you in a loincloth again!
THE AUDIENCE: YEEESSS!
ADAL: But listen! He's now married and is going to be a father again!
THE AUDIENCE: IT DOESN'T MATTER!
ADAL: The girls
..the female audience of OTRO ROLLO, couldn't care
less that you're married!
That you're a father!
CHAYANNE: No, but truly, I'm very happy. The family is very beautiful!
It's growing! I'm seven months along! -CHAYANNE MAKES A SLIGHT GESTURE
AND POINTS TO HIS STOMACH Like some people in the industry, who are also
pregnant!
ADAL: Yes, I'm going on three months!
CHAYANNE: Congratulations!
ADAL: Look! Look!
CHAYANNE: Yes! I'm in the same situation!
-ADAL SHOWS CHAYANNE AND THE AUDIENCE A PROTRUDING STOMACH-
ADAL: It looks more like eight months, but
CHAYANNE: That's because you're carrying twins!
ADAL: I'm carrying twins? Keep it up, my friend, you'll see!
-ADAL CONTINUES TALKING ABOUT HIS ENORMOUS STOMACH-
ADAL: Amazing! I think I'm carrying a tennis court!
CHAYANNE: And a scooter! I see a scooter there somewhere!
ADAL: There's a closet full of toys, don't you think? Listen, you mentioned
you didn't realize the clip
about the swimming pool was being shown live?
CHAYANNE: No, that's why I want to see it again, so you can explain to
me what you did because
during the second jump, it looks as if you burned your legs
..
ADAL: How did I burn them?
CHAYANNE:
although you had the assistance of a professional, whom
I'd like to congratulate by
the way, Fernando Platas, for his silver medal
.
ADAL: Yes, Fernando Platas!
CHAYANNE: But, I don't know
.can we see that clip again, so you can
explain to me what you did?
ADAL: I don't know if
.Lalo, is the video available?
ADAL: It was live! We were going to .
.I want to warn you
.there
it is!
CHAYANNE: There it is! There it is!
-A CLIP IS SHOWN WHERE ADAL IS GETTING READY TO DIVE INTO A POOL FROM
AN EXTREMELY HIGH DIVING BOARD. ONCE HE JUMPS, HE HAS TO HIT THE TARGET
AND
FALL EXACTLY WITHIN A CIRCLE-SHAPED OBJECT PLACED IN THE POOL. HE DOES
IT PERFECTLY-
CHAYANNE: That's very impressive! It's an incredibly high jump! I remember
when I was twelve
years old, I made a movie called Conexión Caribe (Caribbean Connection)
..
ADAL: Aha
..
CHAYANNE: And we had to jump from exactly the same height, which is the
professional height
used in the
.
ADAL: Look! Look!
CHAYANNE: But
I admire you! We were very nervous!
ADAL: Yes, I was also very nervous!
-THE CLIP IS SHOWN FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE. THIS IS A CLOSE-UP SHOT AND
IT
SHOWS ADAL SQUEEZING HIS NOSE WHEN JUMPING-
ADAL: Look! I'm squeezing my nose!
CHAYANNE: If you miss
..
ADAL: What a good cameraman we had! He missed the entire shot, right there!
CHAYANNE: If you miss
..and get hit by the circle
..
ADAL: Do you know, what worried me was that suddenly that circle would
cut off my nose, because
there's a lot to cut off, you see! Not in your case, but in mine! Besides,
there was a chance it could clip
off my noble parts.
CHAYANNE: That, my friend, was exactly my worry then. My friend, that
worried me the most.
ADAL: Well, at that time, my wife was already pregnant, so I said to myself:
"If something big is lost,
so be it."
-CHAYANNE AND THE AUDIENCE LAUGH-
ADAL: No, listen! It's big to me! For my personal life!
CHAYANNE: All right!
ADAL: We have the other clip, but, Lalo, wait, don't show it yet. I wanted
to mention that I'd never dived before. Although you really can't call
that a dive. I mean, what I did was just an idiocy!
CHAYANNE: But it was done well!
ADAL: All right, let's see, Lalito! But it was live, with Fernando Platas.
-ANOTHER CLIP IS SHOWN OF A DIFFERENT DIVE. THIS ONE SHOWS ADAL
FALLING WITHOUT ANY COORDINATION OF BODY MOVEMENTS-
ADAL: My God! What is that? God! It looks like a fall performed by a
stunt man! No, no I look like
..
CHAYANNE: No, it's impressive! It doesn't seem possible because
..
ADAL: There's the shot from above!
-THE SAME SHOT IS SHOWN FROM A DIFFENT ANGLE. IN THIS SHOT, ADAL'S LEGS
SEEM TO BE GOING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS-
ADAL: There's the shot from above. Look how straight my legs are! And
there I was! The competitor
from Denmark! How impressive!
CHAYANNE: México gave you a good score!
ADAL: What was my score?
CHAYANNE: It was either nine or ten from México! And Puerto Rico
also gave you nine or ten!
ADAL: Look, I look as if I was ejected from somewhere! I almost lost my
face!
CHAYANNE: And that's not all you could have lost!
ADAL: And that's not all! And what would I do without this face? How do
I sell albums without this
face, Chayanne?
CHAYANNE: You would, you would! With your charisma!
ADAL: My charisma? No way! Listen, CHAYANNE, SIMPLEMENTE. We're going
to take a
small break, and then we'll talk about this new production. We'll talk
of things to come; we'll talk about your life;
we'll talk about your roll as a father, not only to Lorenzito, but also
to the other one on the way!
CHAYANNE: There's another one on the way! It's going on seven months now!
ADAL: Seven months! We'll take a break and we'll be back with the one
and only, CHAYANNE!
-ADAL KNEELS DOWN NEXT TO CHAYANNE AND POSE FOR THE CAMERAS, HOLDING
THE CD COVER OF THE SIMPLEMENTE ALBUM. THE ANNOUNCER CAN BE HEARD
MAKING THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS:
ANNOUNCER: "They've already shown us they're pros on the diving
board. What else will they be
showing us? CHAYANNE in OTRO ROLLO will give us some dancing lessons,
so, stay tuned!"
-BACK FROM THE COMMERCIAL BREAK. ONE FAN SHOUTS SOMETHING
INAUDIBLE TO CHAYANNE. CHAYANNE WAVES TO HER. ADAL IS HOLDING A
LARGE STACK OF MESSAGES RECEIVED THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT-
ADAL: There are messages from girls of all ages, colors and flavors!
Rosendo García, 19 years old, from Nesa
.Rosendo says "Chayanne,
please, send a kiss to my mother. She likes you very much
and she refuses to cook dinner until you do."
CHAYANNE: Here's a kiss for your mom. Señora, a kiss!
ADAL: Listen, that kiss from Chayanne had the message: "Señora,
get to work."
CHAYANNE: No! Please feed him, he's a growing boy!
ADAL: Then, someone is asking you to sing Salomé.
CHAYANNE: Salomé! That song is from the previous album and, for
example, I'm always changing
the dancers, so the ones who accompany me learn the new choreography that
we use in the current promotional tour.
ADAL: Don't worry, later on you and I will sing Salomé on our own!
There are girls from all
.from
all ages
.Diana González from Mazatlán, Sinaloa: "You
sing and dance marvelously." All these messages are for CHAYANNE!
Listen, you're stealing my spotlight!
CHAYANNE: No, not at all!
ADAL: Listen, Chayanne. You already have a baby
.Lorenzito is three
years old
..
CHAYANNE: He turned three in August.
ADAL: He turned three in August
.so he's three years and two months!
CHAYANNE: Yes, three years and two months.
ADAL: How does it feel to be a dad? A super star being a father and changing
diapers!
CHAYANNE: And I do it very well! I can do it with one hand!
ADAL: And how do they look? Do they fit up to his throat?
CHAYANNE: Absolutely not! I do it very well! But, being a father is the
most wonderful thing! When you
have a child, you realize how much your parents love you. You find out
all the love your parents have
for you, the love your father has for you. When you have a child, is when
you realize your parents
would give their lives for you. It's an immense love, without dimensions.
And that's what I'm
experiencing with Lorenzo! It's wonderful! I taught him to swim, I taught
him to ride a bike, I taught
him to ride a scooter! He already has
.this little person
..
ADAL: I can teach him how to dive, if you'd like?
CHAYANNE: NO! Thank you! I'd much rather Platas teach him! No, please!
ADAL: "And where's Lorenzo? He went to the pool with Adal!"
NOOOO! So, you've taught him
how to do a lot of things?
CHAYANNE: A lot of things! The time I spend with him is limited, but I
give him quality time. I try to share things with him. I have a charming
family. I have family that understands my job and understands me and
gives me the freedom to have those long absences that I have. But I'm
very, very, happy with Lorenzo, truly!
ADAL: Anyone would think that a star like you, Chayanne, who travels to
different countries, of whom the recording companies require
.obviously,
the recording companies want you everywhere
.a press
conference, a radio interview, a television program, a commercial, this
brand or that one, the movie
.
I mean
.
CHAYANNE: The movie!
ADAL:
..you probably ask yourself, "when do I see my son?"
CHAYANNE: No, but when I make a movie, for example, while I'm filming
the movie, during those six
months, I'm able to bring my family with me. But when I come to México
for a visit of two days like the
one I'm making now
.
ADAL: Why bother packing and all that!
CHAYANNE: Why bother packing! But it is also about protection and the
velocity in which one
travels. And I'm the type who worries about safety and security and I'd
be worrying if they got there
all right, if everything arrived
.because I, personally deal and
take care of my family when we travel. It's very different than when I
travel alone, because when I'm doing a promotion with the company,
there are plenty of people to help me then.
ADAL: In those cases, you don't even have the time to see where your family
is!
CHAYANNE: Exactly! It's very dangerous!
ADAL: But you should have brought them! Here in México City, they
can come and go at two or
three o'clock in the morning without any problems!
-CHAYANNE AND THE AUDIENCE LAUGH AT THIS SARCASTIC REMARK BY ADAL-
ADAL: Isn't this true?
AUDIENCE: YEEESSSS!
ADAL: Listen, bring your wife here and tell her: "Go for a walk to
the Charco de las Ranas.*"
-*CHARCO DE LAS RANAS IS A CHAIN OF RESTAURANTS LOCATED
THROUGHOUT MEXICO CITY. SOME OF
THE SITES ARE FOUND IN THE MOST AFFLUENT SECTIONS OF THE CITY AND THEY
OBVIOUSLY CATER TO
THE ELITE AND SOME OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS. ONE OF THESE SITES BECAME FAMOUS
A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN A PROMINENT TV PERSONALITY MET WITH A TRAGIC END
IN THE HANDS OF AN UNKNOWN ASSAILANT, WHEN LEAVING THE RESTAURANT AFTER
A BUSINESS LUNCH. HENCE THE SECURITY REFERENCE. CHARCO
DE LAS RANAS, BY THE WAY, LITERALLY TRANSLATES TO: THE FROG PUDDLE-
ADAL: "Honey, go jump in the puddle and come back." What's
the problem? Nothing will happen!
CHAYANNE: I know nothing will happen, but I'm here for just a very short
time, so I wasn't able to bring
them!
-ADAL TEASES CHAYANNE FOR HIS VERY POLITICALLY CORRECT ANSWER-
ADAL: Listen, Chayanne, let's talk about the very first time you changed
a diaper. You couldn't have done
it with one hand the first time!
CHAYANNE: No, no. But, I have experience
. I have two
.after
me, came two little brothers. My two
little brothers who now are
ADAL: Huge guys!
CHAYANNE: They're giants! So, that's the experience I had
.with my
brothers. I was eight years old when
..
ADAL: What is the difference in ages
..
CHAYANNE: Eight years. I'm eight years older than the one who came after
me, and nine years older than
the youngest one
.nine and a half years!
ADAL: So, you learned to change diapers when you were eight years old!
CHAYANNE: When I was little! My mother taught me!
ADAL: But, were they the disposable diapers, or the ones made out of cloth?
CHAYANNE: The ones made out of cloth, but we also had the disposable diapers,
which are more
practical! I remember the ones made out of clothes had little designs
.a
little bear, and my mom would
take the time to draw it and then transfer it to the diapers.
ADAL: Did she really draw designs?
CHAYANNE: Yes, she did it with an iron! I don't know exactly how she did
it, but
.
ADAL: But she would iron it and then she would transfer the stickers.
CHAYANNE: A sticker, yes! So, I remember what I learned from her, and
then I had my nephews, the
boys, my sister's sons and
.oh, no!
-AT THIS POINT THE BAND BEGINS PLAYING A LULLABY AND CHAYANNE
IMMEDIATELY SEEMS VERY AFFECTED BY IT-
ADAL: You're beginning to miss you son!
CHAYANNE: Of course! I always miss him! You miss your family! You miss
your family very much! And especially because of the type of work we do.
You're always traveling, you're always absent and you want
to be with
..this music makes you feel melancholic
..
ADAL: I assume you rock the baby with this music
.because I don't
think you put him to sleep with the
music from BOOM BOOM or SALOME
..
-ADAL FIRST MAKES A ROCKING MOTION WITH HIS ARMS WHEN TALKING ABOUT
THE LULLABY, BUT THEN HE VERY COMICALLY MIMICS CHAYANNE'S DANCE
MOVEMENTS AND THEN THROWS "THE BABY" UP IN THE AIR. CHAYANNE
BEGINS LAUGHING, BUT TRIES TO MOVE ON WITH THE CONVERSATION-
CHAYANNE: No, absolutely not! He used to sing to himself when he was
little!
-CHAYANNE IS STILL LAUGHING AND IS HAVING A HARD TIME CONCENTRATING
BECAUSE ADAL IS STILL ON THE SUBJECT-
ADAL: Can you imagine, if you shake the baby that way, he'll have his
intestines coming out of his mouth!
CHAYANNE: No, but he's got rhythm! And he used to sing himself to sleep.
He would rock himself to
sleep, singing.
ADAL: He would sing your songs?
CHAYANNE: No, no! At that time he still couldn't talk! He'd used vowels,
sounds!
ADAL: He would hum!
CHAYANNE: He would hum something! How cute he was! How beautiful!
-CHAYANNE IS VERY EMOTIONAL. SOMEONE FROM THE AUDIENCE MENTIONS SOMETHING
ABOUT CRYING-
ADAL: Don't you start crying, because you'll make me cry!
CHAYANNE: No!
ADAL: You'll be sobbing!
-CHAYANNE LAUGHS, BUT IT'S OBVIOUS THAT HE'S VERY MOVED BY THIS ENTIRE
CONVERSATION-
CHAYANNE: No, but I mean, it's beautiful and I have all those wonderful
memories that
.that
.enough already!
ADAL: I want to be in your shoes already, and, in six more months
I'll
be there!
CHAYANNE: You just wait! You'll see when your time comes!
ADAL: My time will come! But what I mean is that I already learned something
from you. You met Gabby,
my wife, she's right there.
CHAYANNE: Yes.
ADAL: I learned, from you, how to change a diaper, but, you never mentioned
you've cleaned him! You
said you change the diapers, but do you ever wipe his
..
CHAYANNE: Yes, I do, I clean him. There are some little towels you purchase
and you use them to
clean him, to keep him very, very clean!
ADAL: You mean, you swipe the little towel over the area
.
CHAYANNE: Yes.
ADAL: You did that to your brothers also?
-CHAYANNE ONLY LAUGHS-
ADAL: You mean, now you can tell your brothers about
-ONE ASSISTANT TOSSES ADAL A STUFFED ANIMAL. IT'S A LITTLE GREEN DRAGON
WITH A NOT TOO PRETTY LITTLE FACE-
ADAL: Let's see! Well, I hope my child doesn't come out looking like
this! But anyway, this is just so
you can show me how it works. Let's pretend this is
.
-THE DRAGON IS ANATOMICALLY INCORRECT FOR THE LESSON. THERE'S THE
FRONTAL SIDE OF THE BODY THAT CONTINUES WITH A TAIL THAT POINTS UPWARDS-
CHAYANNE: It's backwards! It's backwards!
ADAL: Is it backwards?
-ADAL PROCEEDS TO TWIST THE HEAD OF THE DRAGON TO WHERE IT FACES ITS
OWN TAIL. THE ENTIRE STUDIO AND CHAYANNE ARE LAUGHING SO HARD NOW, THAT
ADAL HAS A LITTLE TROUBLE GETTING CHAYANNE'S ATTENTION-
ADAL: So, it's like this and
.Chayanne! Chayanne! So, then it goes
like this and the little towel
.the little towel comes already moist
..
CHAYANNE: You have the diaper
.wait
.-CHAYANNE HAD BEGUN TALKING
WITHOUT THE USE OF THE MICROPHONE, WHICH HE'S HOLDING IN HIS LEFT HAND-
ADAL: This is a madhouse, isn't it?
CHAYANNE: Anyway, you take the diaper, and you clean him with the same
diaper, and then
.
-ADAL TWISTS THE ANIMAL'S HEAD TOWARDS CHAYANNE AND IT LOOKS AS IF THE
ANIMAL IS PAYING ATTENTION TO WHAT CHAYANNE IS SAYING-
CHAYANNE: He's watching! He's understanding what we're saying! Anyway,
you clean him with the same diaper and then
..
-ADAL THEN BRINGS THE HEAD OF THE DRAGON DOWN TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE AREA
IN QUESTION-
CHAYANNE: If he could only be a father
..
ADAL: Imagine that!
CHAYANNE: You clean him with the same diaper, and after you clean him
with the diaper, then you go
over the area with the little towel
.
ADAL: With the little towel you go over his little behind?
CHAYANNE: You go over his little behind with the towel, then you lift
his little behind, you slide the clean
diaper underneath, you then close the diapers and stick the self-adhesive
tabs on the diaper, and that's it!
-THE AUDIENCE APPLAUDS CHAYANNE FOR HIS GREAT KNOWLEDGE IN PERFORMING
THIS AMAZING TASK. CHAYANNE ADDRESSES THE AUDIENCE-
CHAYANNE: True or false? True or false?
AUDIENCE: TRUE!!!!!
ADAL: Now, this process applies only if the baby is a boy! If it's a girl,
I believe there's a different technique
that you must use, but I would have to learn it!
ADAL: Do you know if this new baby is going to be a boy or a girl?
CHAYANNE: I don't know! Every time I go, the baby closes his legs!
ADAL: You mean, during the ultrasound, he closes his legs.
CHAYANNE: I don't know that he closes them, but he's in a position with
his legs close to his body and
I'm not able to see.
ADAL: It's hard to tell!
CHAYANNE: Yes, my mother tells me it's going to be a girl, but we have
to wait and see.
ADAL: So, then, the technique used with a boy, is that you lift his little
things and
..
CHAYANNE: No, no! You don't lift anything! You don't lift anything
.
ADAL: You don't need to touch anything?
CHAYANNE: You don't need to touch anything! Don't make it more problematic!
-ADAL PLAYFULLY WRESTLES WITH THE ANIMAL-
ADAL: Let go of me! Let go of me! So then you clean the area
how
many of the little towels do you
use? More or less, what's the norm?
CHAYANNE: I use
.when you do it right, only one, Adal! Yes, because
you can't be wasting too many!
ADAL: You can't use an entire package every time the baby goes poo poo!
CHAYANNE: It all depends on how much there is! Just wait, you'll have
a few surprises!
ADAL: You mean, it can be a lot!
CHAYANNE: Of course it can be a lot! Sometimes there is so much that it
comes out of the diaper!
ADAL: It actually comes out of the diaper?
CHAYANNE: Of course, it happens sometimes! It depends on the baby! Mine
is very considerate, he
always does everything inside the diaper!
ADAL: It's not their fault that sometimes the diapers are not very sturdy,
right?
CHAYANNE: Exactly!
ADAL: And has it ever happened that you've gotten wet? When the little
hose gets loose and it flies
everywhere and it wets you?
CHAYANNE: Yes, yes, it has happened, but it didn't hit me directly, it
hit the diaper. You're always a little careful and you move it a little
to the side!
ADAL: You move it to the side
.."move over, man, move over."
CHAYANNE: And one feels pride
.because I'm proud of him, you see
.I'm
extremely proud!
ADAL: "Let's see, son, let's move ALL that to one side."
-ADAL AND CHAYANNE MAKE A GRAND GESTURE WITH THEIR HANDS, AS IF MOVING
AN EXTREMELY LARGE OBJECT TO THE SIDE. THEY LAUGH AND HIGH-FIVE EACH
OTHER-
ADAL: Ladies and gentlemen, we'll go to a short break. We'll be back
with CHAYANNE!
-ANNOUNCER: Yes, my dear Adal, since we now have learned certain details
about Chayanne's son, stay tuned to see what else we can find out, here
in OTRO ROLLO-
-BACK FROM THE COMMERCIAL BREAK-
ADAL: My dearest Chayanne, this time you've spent here
..
(AT THIS POINT, WHILE ADAL IS SORTING THROUGH THE TELEPHONE MESSAGES
RECEIVED, A WOMAN FROM THE AUDIENCE SHOUTS "PAPACITO" TO CHAYANNE.
HE ONLY SMILES)
ADAL: Listen to this message! Carlos Alerto, 19, from Chalco. He says:
"I don't like it when you come to México, Chayanne.
-CHAYANNE SEEMS TAKEN ABACK BY THIS MESSAGE. ADAL CONTINUES-
ADAL: "I don't like it when you come to México, because when
you're here, my girlfriend never pays
attention to me."
ADAL: I can imagine what you look like, Carlos! No, but listen, Chayanne.
Have you ever encountered a
fan's jealous boyfriend or husband? Where they come up to you and confront
you?
CHAYANNE: No! At least, they've never shown any unpleasantness. But, I've
been lucky, when you attend
one of my shows, you see couples there, and the young men also ask me
for autographs, and fortunately, until now, I haven't had any problems,
or at least, I haven't noticed any!
ADAL: And if they mind, they probably mumble under their breath: "Fine,
I'm here with you but don't
expect
." And then, when you begin with your moves, they probably
say: "Well, I think I'm also liking the
guy." Have you ever been approached by a man, in that way?
CHAYANNE: No, never. They ask me for autographs or photographs.
ADAL: Yes, but what about one coming up to you: "Hello, Chayanne,
I'd like to have your shirt, Chayanne."
CHAYANNE: No, no. Perhaps they've asked for it to give to their sisters!
ADAL: "It's for my sister." But you can tell that's not the
case.
CHAYANNE: No, no. They ask for autographs. I mean, you give autographs
to everyone. You thank the
public for all the support they've given you throughout your career and
you go on your way.
ADAL: And you say, goodbye! After a concert, do you immediately retire
for the night?
CHAYANNE: No, it depends. Sometimes after the concert there's some type
of event going on. Maybe a meeting with the company representatives, if
I don't have another show. If I have another show, I try to rest, because
with the type of show I have, where there's a lot of movement, I have
to take care of myself.
ADAL: You consume a lot of physical energy.
CHAYANNE: I spend a lot of energy! That's another thing, when I'm doing
a promotion and I haven't really done a lot of conditioning and I'm doing
a song that requires a lot of movement, I have to be very careful with
the muscles because it has happened that I've hurt myself. So I try to
stretch and keep in form and when I'm
done with my activities, I then go to the hotel and rest.
-THERE'S MURMURING AND LAUGHS FROM THE AUDIENCE. CHAYANNE STOPS
TALKING AND LOOKS THEIR WAY. ADAL, VERY MATTER OF FACTLY, EXPLAINS TO
CHAYANNE WHAT THAT MEANS-
CHAYANNE: What happened?
ADAL: No, it's just the girls' reaction to the comment you made about
stretching.
-CHAYANNE LAUGHS AND ADDRESSES THE AUDIENCE-
CHAYANNE: One has to be careful, right?
ADAL: No, no. But when you stretch, you have to be careful. A wrong move
and you end up with a cramp somewhere!
CHAYANNE: No, but I try to be careful, really. I need to be careful.
ADAL: What I often think about is
at one point in my life,
my younger brother, Manuel Jesús, -to whom,
by the way, I'd like to say hello and also to his wife Sylvia- he put
together a rock band and he told me I was
to be the lead singer. I would then sing a song, and after that one song,
I had no voice left! We were a group
of two songs only because that's as far as I went. By the third song,
I was down to sign language! No, but
really, it would always amaze me and I'd realized all the care that singers
must have to protect their vocal
chords. The throat is obviously your instrument!
CHAYANNE: It is your instrument! And you have to take care of it and do
your exercises and in my case, where I dance while singing, I have to
learn how to control the intakes of air. The height here in México
City requires you to change the rhythm of the show. Sometimes you have
to let the dancers move more; you have
to know how to deal with the different conditions that affect the show.
For example, when I have a cold, I sometimes have to cancel the show.
Right now, I'm just getting over the flu.
ADAL: You caught it in Seville!
CHAYANNE: I caught it Seville. I was doing the Gala de la Hispanidad en
Seville and I got sick. The long
flights that take anywhere from 8 to 15 hours and you catch that cold
inside the plane.
ADAL: You're in the airplane and say: "Miss, please, tell the captain
to lower the temperature is too cold in here!" But they don't listen
to you!
CHAYANNE: No, they don't, you just have to dress warmly. But you have
fun. It's very entertaining. You
have to make a lot of sacrifices but, well, here I am in this career,
in which I've spent quite a few years.
ADAL: Has it been your experience, what happens to other singers; I don't
know if it's happened to you, that's why I'm asking, where they go: "My
voice! My voice, it's gone and the concert is tomorrow! I need a doctor,
I need a shot!" And suddenly, the nerves are so big, that your throat
has closed down
.
CHAYANNE: Or that you can't sleep all night due to nervousness, a lot
of times! But, no, you try to take care
of yourself. Always listen to what your mother and your grandmother tell
you. Take lemon and honey, or you have the doctor check you. You try to
take care but things do happen sometimes, but you continue.
ADAL: And you obviously must go on. People have paid for their tickets
and
.
CHAYANNE: And there's the adrenaline. There comes a point when you're
tired or cold, but the adrenaline
that the audience itself gives you with their applause, when they sing
with you, because I don't know if you
know this, but it really helps you a lot when they sing with you!
ADAL: You're out of breath and point the microphone towards them and say:
"How does it go?" And you go: "Please, let them keep on
singing."
-CHAYANNE LAUGHS-
ADAL: And they say: "I might as well get back half of what I paid
for the concert! I sang through most of the show!"
CHAYANNE: No, but they give you life!
ADAL: They inject life into you!
CHAYANNE: They do! The audience does!
ADAL: Chayanne, you obviously are part of a great recording company, and
I don't know if you are aware of this
.you tend to the production
of an album, to the cover, to the musicians, etc., but perhaps, you're
not
aware sometimes of how many copies of the albums you sell! I mean, you
know that you sold a lot of copies,
but sometimes you wonder how many or how fast! Well, I'm here to tell
you that we have with us, Daniel
Olmos, who is the marketing director of Sony/Columbia, and he's here to
tell us how many copies of Simplemente you've sold!
-ADAL AND CHAYANNE STAND UP TO GREET THE REPRESENTATIVE FROM SONY. HE
COMES IN WTH A PLAQUE FOR CHAYANNE. ADAL SHAKES HANDS WITH DANIEL
OLMOS. CHAYANNE SHAKES HIS HAND AND ALSO GIVES HIM AN EMBRACE-
ADAL: This is a surprise, Chayanne! This is a surprise for you here in
OTRO ROLLO!
CHAYANNE: Thank you very much!
DANIEL: It is a pleasure to be here once again, and have the opportunity
to greet a great friend, a truly great friend of many years.
CHAYANNE: Thank you.
DANIEL: It is a great honor for me because this album represents to you
and to us, once again, another great
hit for you here, in this México of yours, with more than 100,000
copies sold in less than one month!
CHAYANNE: Wonderful! Beautiful!
ADAL: Can you believe it? The album has just been released, and it has
already sold more than 100,000
copies!
CHAYANNE: It's wonderful! I want to thank México for this beautiful
gift! Thank you! And Sony, also!
-CHAYANNE SHAKES HANDS ONCE AGAIN WITH DANIEL OLMOS-
ADAL: And Sony!
CHAYANNE: Of course!
ADAL: Sony, that always stands behind its artists!
-ADAL AND DANIEL OLMOS ARE HOLDING THE LARGE PLAQUE. ADAL ADDRESSES THE
AUDIENCE-
ADAL: Ladies and gentlemen, do you want more songs from Chayanne?
AUDIENCE: YEESS!
ADAL: More songs?
CHAYANNE: Absolutely!
ADAL: We'll go to a break, and we'll be back with
..CHAYANNE!
-GOING INTO THE COMMERCIAL BREAK, THE CAMERA SHOWS A CLOSE-UP OF CHAYANNE.
HE WINKS AT THE CAMERA AND SMILES-
-AFTER THE BREAK, ADAL IS STANDING WITH CHAYANNE ONSTAGE. ADAL IS HOLDING
THE SIMPLEMENTE CD COVER, AND A LARGE STACK OF MESSAGES RECEIVED THROUGHOUT
THE NIGHT-
ADAL: All the messages we receive tonight, will be given to you. You
may take them with you.
CHAYANNE: I'll take them! And if there's a phone number listed, I'll answer!
ADAL: You will answer if there's a phone number?
CHAYANNE: I will! Some of them!
ADAL: Then call us! Chayanne, you're on the record!
CHAYANNE: I'll answer some of them! I'll call from my cell phone in the
car, on my way to the hotel!
ADAL: Let's do this! Girls, send your number! He's going to choose two
or three messages, and you'll call
them to say hello as soon as the show is over!
CHAYANNE: The minute the show is over!
ADAL: Ladies and gentlemen, this is SIMPLEMENTE, and he'll sing for us,
right here, in OTRO ROLLO, in
the first appearance he made during his visit to México, YO TE
AMO!
-CHAYANNE SINGS YO TE AMO. WHEN THE SONG IS OVER, ADAL RETURNS TO THE
STAGE AND GREETS CHAYANNE ONCE AGAIN. HE ADDRESSES THE AUDIENCE-
ADAL: Do you want to continue chatting with Chayanne? Chayanne, will
continue talking with you about
you life, your deeds and your miracles! Well, your first miracle was your
baby and then there's another one
on the way!
CHAYANNE: Another one is on the way!
ADAL: We're going to talk about
..you don't know this, but there
was a moment when his parents wanted
to take him out of the entertainment world! But we'll talk about that
a little bit later
CHAYANNE: Very well!
ADAL: This is OTRO ROLLO!
ANNOUNCER: Remember that Chayanne will call one of you on his way to
the hotel! We'll be back! Stay tuned and watch him dance!
-WHILE THE ANNOUNCER IS TALKING, THE CAMERA IS FOCUSING ON ADAL AND CHAYANNE.
ADAL SHOWS THE CD COVER AND PLACES IT NEXT TO CHAYANNE'S FACE.
CHAYANNE LOOKS TOWARDS THE CAMERA, HE POINTS TO THE CD COVER AND SAYS:
"THAT'S ME!"
-BACK FROM COMMERCIAL BREAK. CHAYANNE AND ADAL ARE SITTING DOWN ONCE
AGAIN-
ADAL: It turns out, that in Chayanne's family, everyone plays something!
-CHAYANNE FINDS THIS COMMENT VERY FUNNY. I SUSPECT
THIS HAS TO DO WITH THE MEANING OF THE WORD 'PLAY." IN SPANISH, THE
WORD FOR "PLAY" TRANSLATES TO "TOUCH." SO, IN ENGLISH,
WHEN SOMEONE
"PLAYS AN INSTRUMENT," IN SPANISH SOMEONE "TOCA -TOUCHES-UN
INSTRUMENTO." THIS EXPRESSION IS OFTEN USED AS A DOUBLE-MEANING COMMENT
BY SOME PEOPLE-
ADAL: I mean, everybody has some kind of musical ability!
CHAYANNE: Yes, exactly!
ADAL: For example, your grandfather, what did he play?
CHAYANNE: My grandfather
.
-CHAYANNE IS STILL LAUGHING-
ADAL: Your grandfather must have played something, or else, how do you
explain the large family?
CHAYANNE: Yes, he played
.his instrument was the cuatro. Cuatro is
an instrument typical to Puerto Rico.
It has a sharp sound. My sister played the guitar and she sang the songs
from those beautiful Méxican movies they would show in Puerto Rico.
My brother would play the accordion, the cuatro, the guitar. My uncle
would play the accordion.
ADAL: And what would you play?
CHAYANNE: I
I
I
.-HE LAUGHS-
ADAL: What would you play?
CHAYANNE: I would
.I would
.
ADAL: What would you play?
CHAYANNE: I'd play
.I'd play percussion! I'd play a little
..
ADAL: The triangle!
CHAYANNE: No, I would play percussion! I'd play what you just mentioned!
I'd play the tambourine!
ADAL: The tambourine!
CHAYANNE: Every instrument related to percussion. The guiro.
ADAL: The guiro.
CHAYANNE: And then I started singing in church with my sister and my brother.
ADAL: In the choir of the catholic church.
CHAYANNE: Yes, the catholic church.
ADAL: Are you still catholic?
CHAYANNE: I'm still a catholic. So, I continued singing with them for
about four or five years. My sister is
the one who wanted to be in the music business -and I send her a kiss-
but she couldn't continue because she
had to enter the university, but at first, they came looking for her and
then I continued with the group, and
that's how I got started.
ADAL: But they did the casting with her first.
CHAYANNE: Yes, I used to accompanied her to the rehearsals when I was
ten years old, but I ended up in
the group because they changed the entire concept of the group.
ADAL: So, your sister, who was originally in the group and asked you to
accompany her to the rehearsals,
was out!
CHAYANNE: Yes!
ADAL: How unfair!
CHAYANNE: No! She was in it for a little while! She was in the group for
about six months!
ADAL: ----------?
CHAYANNE: No, she entered the university and papi
..
-CHAYANNE FACES THE CAMERA AND SMILES TO HIS FATHER-
CHAYANNE: My father, my dad, Don Quintín, was very interested
in her entering the university and so she entered the university.
ADAL: But dad was also interested in Chayanne entering the university,
too!
CHAYANNE: Yes, but I left before all that happened!
ADAL: You packed your bags and left!
CHAYANNE: I did! I had a tutor since I was ten. I started with the group,
and the group soon became very popular and
.
ADAL: You're talking about Los Chicos, right?
CHAYANNE: Los Chicos, yes! And he was in accord with that arrangement
because he saw that I was
having fun and everything was done very innocently.
-ADAL LOOKS AT CHAYANNE LIKE HE'S NOT VERY CONVINCED OF THAT LAST PART
OF HIS COMMENT-
CHAYANNE: And I started to travel and
.
ADAL: You got to know things, you became a man during your traveling
..
CHAYANNE: Exactly. No! I was fourteen when I left the group! I was a teenager
when I left the group,
and that's when he tells me to retire and that's what I mentioned to you
earlier
.
ADAL: What we talked about, yes!
CHAYANNE: Retire and
..
ADAL: But when your father -obviously they discussed this at home- when
he calls you and says: "Chayanne,
we don't know how to tell you this, but, we believe you've had enough
fun but now it's time to settle down."
CHAYANNE: No, they always supported me. My mother always accompanied me
to classes I took in the
theater or to singing or dancing lessons. She was always with me. They
were thinking about my future. They
just wanted to make sure I knew what I wanted. That's the reason they
were always involved in my career
after I left the group.
ADAL: They wanted to make sure you liked what you were doing, if not,
you'd get out!
CHAYANNE: Exactly. It was then that I got
ADAL: At fourteen you already
-THE AUDIENCE LAUGHS AND IS THEN THAT CHAYANNE REALIZES ADAL IS GIVING
A DOUBLE MEANING TO HIS COMMENTS-
ADAL: You had an awakening during your travels!
CHAYANNE: No, yes. I was in the group until I was fourteen and a half!
Between the ages of fourteen and a half and fifteen, I got a lot
..I
got a lot
..
-THE AUDIENCE LAUGHS AT THIS COMMENT. CHAYANNE LOOKS UP BECAUSE AT FIRST
HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THAT HIS COMMENT WAS TAKEN IN THE WRONG CONTEXT
BY EVERYONE-
ADAL: It's true, it's true! For me, it was at the age of fourteen also!
And for you, at what age
?
-CHAYANNE'S REACTION IS A BEAUTIFUL BLEND OF EMBARRASSMENT AND SHYNESS.
HE CLOSES HIS EYES AND LAUGHS NERVOUSLY-
CHAYANNE: I
..
ADAL: At what age, Chayanne?
CHAYANNE: It's just that I don't know what to say anymore!
ADAL: What you were talking about
.."I got a lot
."
At what age?
CHAYANNE: At what age? At fourteen and a half! But
.but
.I already
.I
already wanted to
..be in
the group and the music business, since I was eleven years old! At eleven
years of age, Adal! At eleven
years of age!
ADAL: At eleven years old? What a precocious child!
CHAYANNE: Very precocious! You see! But when I was fourteen, my parents
saw the enthusiasm I had.
I came to México
..
-THE AUDIENCE LAUGHS AGAIN-
ADAL: Really? Just imagine your father
.what is his name? Quintino!
CHAYANNE: Quintino!
ADAL: Your mother: "Quintino, come and look at the way this boy is
leaving the sheets!" They saw your restlessness since an early age!
CHAYANNE: Yes, since I was very young. And I came to México and
here in México is where I started
my career as a soloist.
ADAL: Your career as a soloist!
CHAYANNE: My career as a soloist! I took my first steps here. I recorded
my first two albums in Spain. I came to México and after México
I traveled through Central América, where they already knew me
from the group, and that's how I got started. I then started recording
with CBS, which is now Sony, and I recorded my first international theme,
which is Fiesta in América.
ADAL: I want to tell you that in all the antros* here all of your fast
songs
..here in México, what we call
antros are all the discoteques, night clubs, bars. All the places where
people go dancing and enjoy good music.
In all these places, you clearly have been a constant presence. In the
radio, in the sale of your albums, your videos.
CHAYANNE: The videos.
ADAL: I mean, you've been a steady presence.
CHAYANNE: I've been working ever since Fiesta en América. And it
involves fast music and ballads. We
have songs like Completamente Enamorados and Tiempo de Vals.
-ADAL BEGINS SINGING -HE THINKS- AND DANCING TO TIEMPO DE VALS.
*ANTROS - CHAYANNE IS TAKEN ABACK WHEN HE HEARS ADAL
USING THIS WORD SO FREELY. IN SOME
SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES, THIS WORD IS USED TO DESCRIBE A PLACE DEDICATED
TO LESS NOBLE PROFESSIONS WHERE VICES ABOUND. THAT'S WHY ADAL FELT THE
NEED TO EXPLAIN TO HIM THE
SIGNIFICANCE THIS WORD HAS IN MEXICO-
ADAL: When you watch those videos you realize how far you've come.
CHAYANNE: No, I don't like to watch them! It's very embarrassing!
ADAL: No, but everyone; and those of you at home know what I'm talking
about; everyone at one time has
gone through old photo albums and are shocked to see the way they wore
their hair! But that was the style
back then! If you didn't wear your hair that in that way, you weren't
"cool."
CHAYANNE: Yes, but everything changes. I remember those Versace shirts
I used to wear about six years ago, that were very colorful, and at that
time it was perfectly normal to wear them, but nowadays you wear a shirt
that's more
.
ADAL: There were some very nice things but
.
CHAYANNE: But each era has it own style. But, personally, I'm very satisfied
and
with the albums also, with the album I'm working on
.and the way
my career has been in ascent. I'm extremely happy with the way it's been
going and with the way some people who have collaborated with me from
way back then and whoare now company executives, have worked in my productions
and have supported me through the
years.
ADAL: From the beginning
.
CHAYANNE: For many years. I've been in the music business for twenty-two
years, Adal.
ADAL: It's wonderful. We'll be going to a short break. We have some surprises
with Chayanne. Some
surprises he can't even imagine. More surprises. Now, we don't normally
do this, but I'd like for you to send a kiss to a great friend of mine,
Gabby Gutiérrez, she's the wife of our behind the scenes man, Lalo
Suarez.
CHAYANNE: Of course. Gabby Gutiérrez, I send you a kiss
.
ADAL: It's her birthday!
CHAYANNE: Happy birthday! Happy birthday! A big kiss
.and many more
(healthy birthdays) to come!!
ADAL: Many more birthdays, comadre! Chayanne has sent you your kiss! We're
going to a short break!
-COMING BACK FROM THE COMMERCIAL BREAK, CHAYANNE ACKNOWLEDGES THE
BAND FOR PLAYING SALOME-
ADAL: Theses boys found it for you! They put the arrangements together
this afternoon!
CHAYANNE: Yes.
ADAL: Listen, my dear Chayanne, we were talking earlier, for those of
you who've been changing channels, about how styles change so rapidly.
It can change in one year.
CHAYANNE: Yes, it changes very fast! Colors
.everything changes very
rapidly!
ADAL: Hair styles!
CHAYANNE: Longer, shorter!
ADAL: Accessories!
CHAYANNE: The shirts
with a lot of color, with less color. The styles
.very
formal or much more informal
.it changes greatly.
ADAL: A little over three years ago, when Chayanne was here with us
.almost
four years ago, in 1996, September of 1996, when you visited OTRO ROLLO
for the first time, because this is your second visit
.
CHAYANNE: Yes, this is my second visit! Wow!
ADAL: Wow! Your second visit
.
CHAYANNE: In almost five years.
-ADAL PLAYFULLY PUSHES CHAYANNE ON THE SHOULDER IN A REPROACHING
GESTURE-
ADAL: You're the one who's taken the longest coming back!
CHAYANNE: No, but
.
-CHAYANNE SHRUGS-
ADAL: Less is more!
CHAYANNE: Less is more? All right.
ADAL: Let's watch this, Chayanne. This is a video of when you were here
with us in 1996. Just a short clip. Look at his hair! Look at his hair!
CHAYANNE: Look at all that gel!
-THEY SHOW IMAGES FROM AN INTERVIEW DONE IN SEPTEMBER
1996. ADAL AND CHAYANNE OBVIOUSLY
LOOK MUCH YOUNGER. THE CLIP BEGINS IN THE MIDST OF A CONVERSATION BETWEEN
THE TWO.
(THEY KEEP THE CAMERA ON CHAYANNE IN THE CURRENT PROGRAM TO CATCH HIS
REACTION. HE CAN BE SEENIN A SMALL SHOT AT THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER OF THE
SCREEN, WATCHING THE CLIP FROM 1996.)
CHAYANNE: "
.one grows up. Just imagine! I was eighteen! Of
course one grows up!"
ADAL: "Just imagine! Eighteen years old! And you now almost have
hair. Almost!"
CHAYANNE: "Yes, that's true."
ADAL: "I can see some hair on your chest! Is there a lot?"
-ADAL REACHES OUT AND OPENS CHAYANNE'S SHIRT SLIGHTLY-
CHAYANNE: "It's penciled in!"
-A CLOSE-UP OF CHAYANNE'S CHEST IS SHOWN. (IT'S NOT PENCILED IN.)
ADAL: "It's done with crayons! It's crayons!"
-CHAYANNE LAUGHS AND PULLS HIS SHIRT AND JACKET TOGETHER AND AWAY FROM
ADAL'S INQUISITIVE HANDS-
.
(IN THE SMALL SCREEN, CURRENT PROGRAM, CHAYANNE MAKES THIS COMMENT:
You're still insisting it was crayons!)
-THE AUDIENCE BEGINS CHANTING-
AUDIENCE: "Show us! Show us!"
ADAL: "You want me to show you? Oh, you mean Chayanne! Show it! Show
it!"
-CHAYANNE LAUGHS. ADAL THEN REACHES FOR HIS OWN SHIRT-
CHAYANNE: "Nooo!"
ADAL: "Just so you'll know what it is to have hair! Look!"
-ADAL OPENS HIS SHIRT SLIGHTLY AND SHOWS A SMOOTH CHEST. HE PRETENDS
TO BE SURPRISED-
ADAL: "Oh! What happened? Special effects people, where's the rug
I asked for?"
CHAYANNE: "What happened to you?"
ADAL: "The water heater exploded on this part of my body, that's
why it's so bare!"
CHAYANNE: "What happened? What happened, Adal?"
ADAL: "My partner entertains herself pulling each hair from my body
with her teeth, so that's the
reason I'm completely hairless!"
-THE CLIP FROM 1996 ENDS. BACK TO THE STUDIO-
ADAL: There were nice times! Very nice times!
CHAYANNE: They're beautiful memories!
ADAL: Very beautiful memories!
CHAYANNE: They're beautiful memories!
ADAL: No, but, there are some photographs where my hair is very long!
I look I belong to the Blue Angels
(a music band famous for their long hair.)
CHAYANNE: Or Charlie's Angels!
ADAL: There was a time where your hair looked like a microphone!
CHAYANNE: When I was in Los Chicos. That was during the time where Charlie's
Angels were in style.
Do you remember?
ADAL: Of course! And everyone's hair was blow dried and combed back.
CHAYANNE: We've all gone through that.
ADAL: Yes, I look at my old photographs and I say
.
CHAYANNE: My goodness
..
ADAL: But look at us now! We're in style, the two of us!
CHAYANNE: Yes, we're both dressed in black, very sporty, very comfortable.
I'm cold, but
.
ADAL: He's just arrived from Seville with the flu, and we have him sitting
here under this cold air! Do you
want us to lower the temperature in the room?
CHAYANNE: No, no! Absolutely not!
AUDIENCE: Yeeeees!
CHAYANNE: Oh, are you cold?
AUDIENCE: Yeeeees!
ADAL: How do we know you're cold, Chayanne? Let's see!
-ADAL REACHES OUT AND OPENS CHAYANNE'S SHIRT AND LOOKS AT HIS CHEST.
CHAYANNE LET'S THE AUDIENCE HAVE A PEEK. THE CAMERA PANS OVER CHAYANNE'S
ENTIRE ANATOMY-
ADAL: He is cold! He is cold because he has the high beams on!
-CHAYANNE LAUGHS AND ADAL THEN MAKES A SILLY GESTURE WITH HIS HANDS OVER
HIS OWN CHEST-
ADAL: Listen, my dear Chayanne, your dancing has obviously been part,
a great part of your artistic persona. We know that in the music world
there has been a giant, one giant, with very impressive hip movements,
and
that was Elvis Presley.
CHAYANNE: Elvis Presley, yes.
ADAL: And although you obviously have your own style, I see some resemblance
.
CHAYANNE: We also have Michael Jackson!
ADAL: Michael Jackson!
CHAYANNE: Michael Jackson who was a monster, a monster! Well, he still
is! And, that's been my
schooling. I've worked with a lot of choreographers that Michael Jackson
has worked with. Bill Patterson
.
I've joined forces with a lot of talented people who have helped me to
grow, to develop my own style. And nowadays, for example, when I'm working
on choreography, they bring me steps that are out
there, on the
street and we take those steps and we polish them and adapt them to my
style. Some steps I change
and
others I create.
ADAL: What you mean by steps from the street, you are talking about
..
CHAYANNE: What's out there on the streets. You pay attention
.not
me, personally, because I'm at work, but the choreographer
..
ADAL: People are on the look out for you.
CHAYANNE: Exactly! The choreographer goes out there and brings me what's
in style at the moment. That's why
.
ADAL: You change a thing or two!
CHAYANNE: You change some things. There are some dances where you move
your hands a certain way
.there is some choreography that lends itself
to changes and you're able to take certain liberties and there are others
where you must be exact.
ADAL: Where you look at the video and you and you say, "do it over,"
when a certain dancer is not working
out because it has to be exact.
CHAYANNE: Yes, and also the way the body looks in a camera shot and the
way it looks in a live show can
be completely different, so you try to make the adjustments. But, it's
very time consuming, and besides the time you spend taping the video,
there are also the eight hours of rehearsals you need before you begin
taping.
ADAL: Eight hours?
CHAYANNE: Eight hours!
ADAL: You need to rehearse for eight hours to put together the steps of
..
CHAYANNE: One minute of tape!
ADAL: Eight hours that you spend rehearsing for every shot of a song
CHAYANNE: For example, one of the songs, this song that I'm going to perform,
AY MAMA, we spent five days on it, and it just involves normal steps.
In this album, SIMPLEMENTE, this song has
the tropical sound,
so I always lean more towards using the regular Caribbean rhythms like
the salsa and merengue, so I have
more freedom in steps in this song than I do with a song like BOOM BOOM,
that requires more mechanical, more exact steps. And I try to do that
so that in a show where I perform twenty songs, the audience can see
the difference between the various themes performed.
ADAL: Someone who dances the way you do, when the girls saw you and went
crazy, back then when you were young and you weren't as well recognized
as you are now, did you take advantage of those great moves
to get girls?
CHAYANNE: At eight or nine years old? No, it's not that I used to take
advantage. I enjoyed it. I danced
salsa and merengue back then. In those days, I didn't have the foundations
of what I do now on stage.
If I go some place with some friends, I don't dance. I just watch people
dance.
ADAL: You don't dance?
CHAYANNE: I don't know how to dance. I don't know how to dance.
ADAL: Wait, wait, wait!
CHAYANNE: No, it's true!
ADAL: Let me understand this! If you go some place with your wife, with
your friends, with other couples
..
CHAYANNE: I don't dance.
ADAL: And when they tell you, "come one Chayanne," you tell
them, "no, I'll watch you from here."
CHAYANNE: I watch them dance. I sit there, very relaxed. I watch everybody
dance. I like to watch people dance!
ADAL: Yes, but, when you go to a discoteque, and the word gets around;
because when someone famous shows up in one these places, everyone knows
it in less than a minute; and everyone waits for Chayanne to
stand up and begin dancing, then you keep them waiting!
CHAYANNE: I don't dance, truly! I just watch people dance. And if I do
dance, you'll see me moving very, very slow.
ADAL: Imagine Chayanne dancing like this!
-ADAL STANDS UP AND BEGINS DANCING, USING SOME OLD FASHIONED STEPS FROM
THE 1960's. CHAYANNE LAUGHS-
ADAL: I can't believe it! And what does you wife say? "Dance!"
CHAYANNE: No, no, no!
ADAL: Because the women here in México, will tell you, "don't
be a limp."
CHAYANNE: Oh, really? They insult you, besides!
ADAL: Well, it depends on what condition you are! Because they do tell
you, "you're a limp." That's a
common phrase they use, "don't be a limp." What does you wife
tell you? "Come on, we're here to dance,"
CHAYANNE: No, she doesn't say anything. She doesn't mind. She understands
the other is part of my career.
I know everyone expects me to dance, but I remain seated. And like I said,
if I dance, I dance slow, normal steps, because I don't know
.
ADAL: I assume, I don't know if this is the general rule, that when people
see a famous star, right away they
get very defensive and say, "of course, he's an expert and knows
every step there is and
" And so,
you probably just sit down and don't want to appear as if you're showing
off.
CHAYANNE: No, no. When I dance in the shows, those steps are choreographed!
You can't go some place and start doing a choreographed show, so you try
to keep a low profile, and you feel shyness, because you
know they're watching you and waiting for you to do something! But I don't
do anything! I'm just going to
dance a little!
ADAL: "I'm going to the restroom!" You make a move and everyone
is looking you're way! "I'm going to go peepee! I'm going to the
restroom. I also go peepee!" No, some people think that celebrities
don't do regular things!
CHAYANNE: No, I'm a human being. I relax and
..
ADAL: "I stand in front of the toilet and say go."
CHAYANNE: I relax when
.I'm referring to
.
ADAL: "I loosen the body and
."
CHAYANNE: I meant that I lead a normal life. I'm a completely normal person.
I like to go out to eat.
I do
that a lot, go out to eat, when I have the opportunity. I'm very normal.
What you see onstage, is someone
trying to make sure the audience is not disappointed, and that they see
one is continually growing onstage.
Once I'm off stage, I continue being the same person, just like everyone
else.
ADAL: And we've always appreciated that about you. We know you're a very
simple person, because you've forgotten your roots, the nucleus of your
family life and you friends
.
CHAYANNE: Because that's reality!
ADAL: And that must be preserved, always.
CHAYANNE: The family! You continue being a normal person. You have your
mother, your father, I have
a happy life. Life has truly given me many gifts. I'm extremely happy.
I have a beautiful family. I don't
see them very often, that's one of the things I miss most, but, but, I
lead a normal life!
ADAL: You carry them with you.
CHAYANNE: Yes, I carry them in my heart. It's just that I spent most of
my time working, and traveling and doing shows and interviews, but I also
love all that, it gives me great satisfaction!
ADAL: One thing without the other would not be complete!
CHAYANNE: Exactly!
ADAL: I know you adore
.I mean, if you could, right now, close you
eyes, and go flying
..
CHAYANNE: Without a doubt!
ADAL:
to your pregnant wife and your son
.
CHAYANNE: Without a doubt!
ADAL: To Lorenzito! But
.if you only had that part, you'd miss the
other part that you were born to do.
And if you only had the other, you'd miss the one! You'd be incomplete!
CHAYANNE: Totally! And I enjoy both. I do my job, and I enjoy it! When
I'm with my family, I enjoy them!
I always try to see the positive side of things. And here we are!
ADAL: Well, listen! To all the people who are watching, and I know there
are millions of people watching
right now; you say that when you go to a discoteque, or some other place,
you don't dance because, obviously,
it is not a concert or a television program!
CHAYANNE: Right!
ADAL: Okay? After the break, to Mauricio Castillo, Jordy Rosado and me,
Señor Chayanne will teach us
a few dance steps!
CHAYANNE: Uyyy!
-AFTER THE BREAK. THIS IS A WONDERFUL AND HILARIOUS SKIT DONE BY ADAL,
AND TWO MEMBERS OF HIS MALE CREW, JORDY AND MAURICIO. CHAYANNE IS SUPPOSED
TO BE THE MAESTRO IN A BALLET STUDIO. IN THIS SCENE, ADAL AND CHAYANNE
ARE STANDING AGAINST A WALL WITH A FULL LENGTH MIRROR AND A BARRE. ADAL
IS WEARING A BLACK TUTU. ADAL IS WARMING UP AND IS DOING PIROUETTES-
CHAYANNE: You're bending the leg. You're bending the leg, and be careful
with your ankle because you
can hurt it doing that. It's not that I've studied much ballet but
.
that
.is a little
-CHAYANNE IS NOT VERY SATISFIED WITH HIS STUDENT'S PROGRESS. ADAL LOOKS
AT CHAYANNE AND CONTINUES JUMPING. CHAYANNE LAUGHS-
ADAL: I'm going to perform in Swan Lake! Or perhaps in the Frog Puddle!
Listen, that's maybe too much air time I'm giving that place!
ADAL: All right, what do I do?
CHAYANNE: Raise your leg!
-ADAL THEN PROCEEDS TO RAISE HIS RIGHT LEG AND TO STRETCH IT UP ON THE
BARRE. HE GRIMACES AND PRETENDS TO HAVE PULLED A MUSCLE SOMEWHERE AND
THEN
FALLS TO THE FLOOR-
CHAYANNE: Be careful! Now, put your leg up here!
ADAL: I put my leg up here?
-ADAL PUTS LEG UP ON THE BARRE AGAIN-
ADAL: All right, and now
..
CHAYANNE: Then bring your head down to your shin.
ADAL: What? You want me to do what? Put my head way over there?
CHAYANNE: Well, try to at least bring it down to you knee and then stretch
your arms and try to touch your toes. Eso! You have to be careful with
your back and keep your leg straight.
ADAL: You're demanding too much of me, Chayanne!
CHAYANNE: I never had to do this training! I'm just following the instructions
that Leonor used to give her students!
ADAL: Then you never had to do this?
CHAYANNE: I never had to do this!
-ADAL IS OFF THE BARRE AND DOING PIROUETTES AGAIN-
ADAL: Maestro Chayanne! Maestro Chayanne! How nice of you to teach us,
Maestro Chayanne!
-ADAL WRAPS HIS HANDS AROUND CHAYANNE'S ARM AND BEGINS TALKING IN WHAT'S
SUPPOSED TO BE A YOUNG GIRL'S VOICE. CHAYANNE CAN'T STOP LAUGHING-
ADAL: Maestro Chayanne, I brought my two cousins with me!
CHAYANNE: Oh, really? Let's see, let them in.
ADAL: Girls, where are you?
CHAYANNE: Oh, my God!
-THE TWO MEN COME RUNNING IN, ALSO WEARING BLACK TUTUS AND TALKING IN
YOUNG GIRLS VOICES. THEY RUN EXCITEDLY TOWARDS CHAYANNE BUT HE FENDS
THEM OFF, LAUGHING. MAURICIO GRABS CHAYANNE'S HAND AND SHAKES IT. JORDY
DOES THE SAME THING-
MAURICIO: Maestro Chayanne, what a pleasure!
CHAYANNE: What a beautiful family!
ADAL: Maestro Chayanne, Maestro Chayanne, well
.
-THE THREE MEN ARE JUMPING EXCITEDLY AND DOING PIROUETTES-
ADAL: First position! First position!
-THE THREE MEN ALIGN IN A ROW AND START DOING BASIC BALLET POSITIONS-
CHAYANNE: Eso! That's right! What about a little leap!
ADAL: Do we go down first? Let's go down first!
CHAYANNE: Okay, down! Eso!
ADAL: Maestro, back there, music please!
CHAYANNE: Eso! Up! Up!
JORDY: Oh, no! It ripped! (EITHER HIS TUTU OR A HERNIA)
CHAYANNE: Extend your arms! And I don't know anymore!
ADAL: Listen, Chayanne! Maestro Chayanne! Maestro Chayanne! Maestro Chayanne!
CHAYANNE: Tell me! Tell me!
-ADAL GRABS CHAYANNE'S ARM IN GLEE-
ADAL: Ay! Listen, Maestro Chayanne, teach us some of the new steps, because
this is boring!
CHAYANNE: The new steps? Let's see!
JORDY: We want some jazz or something more modern!
CHAYANNE: Something with more rhythm!
JORDY: Something more Chayanne!
-ADAL TAKES OFF HIS TUTU AND KICKS IT AWAY FROM HIM-
MAURICIO: It's just that our cousin is having her quinceñera!
CHAYANNE: Really?
-JORDY SEES ADAL TAKING OFF HIS TUTU, SO HE TRIES TO PULL DOWN MAURICIO'S.
MAURICIO TELLS HIM THAT HE WANTS TO KEEP HIS ON. JORDY PROCEEDS TO TAKE
HIS TUTU OFF-
ADAL: We want some of the steps
-AT THIS MOMENT, ADAL REALIZES WHAT JORDY IS DOING AND HE TEASES HIM.
JORDY BECOMES EMBARRASSED AND PUTS HIS TUTU BACK ON-
ADAL: Jordy! Jordy!
CHAYANNE: Nice figure!
ADAL: Jordy! Jordy! Jordy, there's nothing there! There's nothing there!
CHAYANNE: He's embarrassed!
-JORDY, AFTER PUTTING HIS TUTU BACK ON, STANDS WITH HIS HANDS IN FRONT
OF
HIM, KEEPING THE TUTU DOWN-
ADAL: I want to tell you that Jordy
.Maestro Chayanne, before he
started working for OTRO ROLLO,
Jordy was a eunuch.
MAURICIO: He was a eunuch!
JORDY: Don't say it! Don't say it!
-ADAL REACHES DOWN AND LOOKS UNDER JORDY'S TUTU-
ADAL: There's nothing there!
MAURICIO: Ay, leave her alone!
ADAL: Maestro Chayanne! Maestro Chayanne! We want to learn steps from
the album! Ay!
CHAYANNE: From the album?
ADAL: Yes, from the album. We want to do some spinning! Here, I'll hold
the microphone for you!
CHAYANNE: From the album! We're going to do something like
..hum,
you caught me off guard! Oh, no!
ADAL: Ay! I should be so lucky, Maestro Chayanne!
MAURICIO: I'm leaving!
ADAL: You girls will get your turn later!
CHAYANNE: Dance a merengue!
MAURICIO: How does the merengue go?
ADAL: Pay attention! Like this! Just look how Maestro Chayanne moves those
hips!
-CHAYANNE (WEARING BLACK LEATHER PANTS, AN UNFASTENED LONG SLEEVED
BLACK SHIRT, AND A SEE-THRU UNDERSHIRT) CONTINUES WITH HIS RHYTMICAL HIP
MOVEMENTS, WHILE THE THREE MEN TRY TO KEEP UP WITH HIM. NEEDLESS TO SAY,
THE AUDIENCE GOES ABSOLUTELY CRAZY SEEING CHAYANNE SLOWLY DO A
COMPLETE TURN, SHOWING ONCE AGAIN, HIS GREAT ASSETS AS A DANCER-
CHAYANNE: This is delicious!
ADAL: Delicious! Ay!
CHAYANNE: I know a little about this, but about ballet I don't
..
MAURICIO: We liked that!
JORDY: Show us a basic routine!
ADAL: Something basic and then a spin!
CHAYANNE: Something basic and a spin! Something basic and spin! Well,
then do the rhythm of La Plena.
-THE BAND IS STILL PLAYING MERENGUE, SO CHAYANNE IS HAVING A HARD TIME
GETTING A FEEL FOR LA PLENA. (THIS IS A RHYTHM TYPICAL TO PUERTO RICO.)
HE
TAKES A FEW STEPS AND STOPS.
ADAL: You can't do the steps with this music, right?
CHAYANNE: Let's have them play a little plena!
-CHAYANNE TURNS TOWARDS THE BAND AND REQUESTS A PLENA-
CHAYANNE: A little plena!
ADAL: A little plena, boys!
-THE BAND DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE HOW TO PLAY THE PUERTO RICAN RHYTHM-
ADAL: They all became paralyzed!
CHAYANNE: If what you want is a spin, then all you have to do is
.
ADAL: Will a huapango do, maestro?
CHAYANNE: A what?
-HUAPANGO IS A RHYTHM TYPICAL TO THE NORTHEASTERN REGION OF MEXICO. CHAYANNE
HAS NO IDEA WHAT THAT ADAL IS TALKING ABOUT-
ADAL: Will a huapango do?
CHAYANNE: What ever they want to play
..
-THE BAND THEN BEGINS PLAYING SOMETHING VERY CEREMONIAL-
ADAL: That sounds like music for a presidential state of the union address!
"The Secretary of Communications
.." Chayanne, show us
something
.aaayyy!
CHAYANNE: No, look! Put your right foot back.
ADAL: Let's do this without music!
CHAYANNE: Put your right foot back, you then push a little forward and
then you spin!
ADAL: Show us how!
-CHAYANNE PROCEEDS TO FOLLOW THE STEPS HE JUST EXPLAINED TO THE MEN AND
HE SPINS. HE'S A LITTLE OFF BALANCE AND STEADIES HIMSELF WITH HIS ARMS.
ADAL
IS READY TO SPIN NOW AND HE TRIES TO DO WHAT CHAYANNE DID. HE SPINS BUT
HIS COORDINATION IS A LITTLE OFF-
ADAL: But I must end in the same spot I started, right?
CHAYANNE: Yes. You must end in the center and try to keep your feet together
when you turn. You'll have more speed.
-ADAL TRIES ONE MORE TIME BUT HE'S STILL NOT GETTING IT RIGHT. CHAYANNE
THEN SHOWS THEM ONE MORE TIME HOW TO DO IT. THIS TIME, CHAYANNE DOES IT
RIGHT. ADAL THEM TRIES ONCE AGAIN. THIS TIME HE LOOKS A LITTLE DIZZY AND
ALMOST
FALLS FORWARD, SO CHAYANNE EXTENDS HIS ARM AND PREVENTS ADAL FROM FALLING-
ADAL: I almost fell on my face! Let's see, Mauricio, you're next! Mauricio,
just look at that stomach! Look
at his socks!
MAURICIO: What's wrong with my stomach?
-MAURICIO LOOKS AT HIMSELF IN THE MIRROR. HE THEN SPINS BUT HE'S WAY
OFF BALANCE AND ENDS UP RUNNING INTO JORDY. CHAYANNE TEASES HIM-
CHAYANNE: Mauricio! You shouldn't drink before coming to work!
-MAURICIO LAUGHS AND CHAYANNE SHAKES HANDS WITH HIM, TO SHOW HIM IT WAS
JUST A JOKE. MAURICIO THEN TRIES IT AGAIN AND THIS TIME HE DOES A DOUBLE
SPIN ALMOST PERFECTLY. IT IS NOW JORDY'S TURN. HE ADDRESSES CHAYANNE-
JORDY: Check this out! Check this out!
CHAYANNE: All right!
ADAL: Wait! Wait! Maestro, he hasn't paid his registration fee! But, all
right, we'll let it slide for now!
JORDY: At least let me do a short spin!
ADAL: All right!
CHAYANNE: A short spin!
-JORDY TRIES TO MOVE, BUT HIS SOCKS STICK TO THE CARPET, PREVENTING HIM
FROM TAKING A STEP-
ADAL: You dummy!
-JORDY TRIES AGAIN AND THIS TIME HE SPINS AND DOES IT RIGHT. EVERYONE
APPLAUDS. MAURICIO AND JORDY ARE ALL EXCITED AND HI-FIVE EACH OTHER
AND END UP PLAYING A CLAPPING GAME. ADAL, IN THE MEAN TIME, SPINS ONCE
AGAIN AND HE AGAIN LOSES HIS BALANCE. CHAYANNE ONCE AGAIN EXTENDS HIS
ARM TO KEEP HIM FROM FALLING-
ADAL: I keep going forward!
-ADAL SPINS YET ONE MORE TIME, AND AGAIN, CHAYANNE EXTENDS HIS ARM TO
HELP HIM STEADY HIMSELF-
ADAL: Chayanne is probably saying to himself: "Stop, you idiot!
Stop, you idiot! Okay, one last spin!
-BEFORE ADAL SPINS, JORDY AND MAURICIO STOP HIM-
MAURICIO: No, no! The three of us together!
JORDY: Wait! Let's end the act with an impact! What do you suggest? What
kind of gestures do you make onstage?
CHAYANNE: That depends on the song! But you must show a serious face!
A mean face! Make a mean
face! Go ahead, make a mean face!
-CHAYANNE SHOWS THEM HOW TO MAKE A MEAN FACE. (HE LOOKS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE.)
THE THREE MEN THEN MAKE A MEAN FACE AND THEY SPIN SIMULTANEOUSLY. CHAYANNE,
FOR THE LAST TIME, KEEPS ADAL FROM FALLING BY EXTENDING HIS ARM AND HELPING
HIM MAINTAIN HIS BALANCE-
ADAL: Chayanne thinks he's in the car with Lorenzito!
CHAYANNE: Yes, I always try to protect him!
-ADAL SPINS ONE LAST TIME. THIS TIME CHAYANNE DOESN'T INTERVENE-
ADAL: This time you were going to let me fall on my face!
-CHAYANNE LAUGHS. ADAL ADDRESSES THE CAMERA-
ADAL: A big applause for Chayanne!
-GOING INTO A COMMERCIAL BREAK, THE ANNOUNCER MENTIONS THEY'LL SHOW A
REPLAY OF THE DANCE SCENE. ADAL AND CHAYANNE WAIT FOR THE REPLAY, BUT
THE SHOT ISN'T READY-
-BACK FROM COMMERCIAL BREAK-
ADAL: Listen, I want to tell you that I got you in deep trouble now!
CHAYANNE: Yes?
ADAL: All the calls are coming in with a phone number!
CHAYANNE: I'll take three
four
.five! I will call! Honestly!
I will call! I'm very happy that
.
ADAL: There are some girls
..here's a message from Rosa: "Chayanne,
I love you, call me!" These messages: "Call me! I admire you
very much! Here's my phone number." This one from Patricia Vásquez
from Coyoacán, no message. All she says is "Chayanne
555------."
This message says: "Don't sit with your legs crossed because you
could develop a condition called phlebitis." This message is for
me? Yes, it's for me! "Adal, don't
sit with your legs
.Fabiola Cheu, from Acueducto de Guadalupe."
I think she means when I sit on my leg like this! That's all right! I'm
not worried about developing phlebitis!
ADAL: Chayanne, your plans for the 100,000 copies sold of this album here,
just in these few days, imagine what those figures are in other places.
So, what's next? What's the next stage in this promotional tour? People
don't exactly have a clear picture of what's involved. They hear that
Chayanne is doing the promotion of his
new album, but what's next? What are you plans for tomorrow?
CHAYANNE: I leave tomorrow for Los Angeles, where I'll be for only one
day. I have a presentation in an awards show. Then I'll leave for Argentina,
and then Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico I'll be
.
ADAL: There presentations are of one day only
.
CHAYANNE: Most of them are one day only. I'll be spending two days in
Puerto Rico, three days in Turkey.
I then go to New York and Chicago. Then I'll move on to Europe. I'll be
in Europe from early February until
late August. What you do in a promotional tour when you first arrive in
a country, is to make contact with all
the media. You make appearances to present your new material, to talk
about what this material entails, you
then travel to Los Angeles to tape the video or to Miami for the completion
of the song that you'll be using for
a first release, what we in the industry know as the first release, and
then the version that actually goes out to
the public and that the people see in a video show in television. And
then, there are also the rehearsals for a
new song you might be presenting during the promotional tour. I have to
decide on the choreography, I have to
..
ADAL: It's exhausting!
CHAYANNE: It's really
.
ADAL: It's rewarding, but exhausting none the less!
CHAYANNE: Yes, yes, but you must keep very focused, you work very hard.
I mean, it's a job, it's your job. The fun part comes when you're onstage,
but before you get onstage
.you know how it is, with your program,
the libretto, the
.
ADAL: The monologue.
CHAYANNE: By the way, that was great preparation, the mirrors, the barre,
the entire production of the skit.
ADAL: Yes, of course! We have a great production team here in OTRO ROLLO.
All the departments
.this
is incredible, every department of TELEVISA deserves recognition. The
technical staff from stage 14, scenery, wardrobe, all the camera people,
special effects, lighting, the musicians; besides all the people we don't
get to
see here, who are in charge of audio, lighting, etc. It's incredible!
More than one hundred people are needed
to put together one single program!
CHAYANNE: Yes. The public sees you in front of the camera or me on the
cover of the cd I'm promoting,
but there's a group of people that you just mentioned, who work -the make-up
person is agreeing with me, because she works very hard also- this group
of people around us who is always supporting us and who deserves recognition
and acknowledgment because they're part of you. They're part of that team
that allows
you to be where you are.
ADAL: And even more so at the moment, because we are celebrating 50 years
of television in México!
CHAYANNE: Is that so! Congratulations!
ADAL: Yes! And we ought to applaud the pioneers and all the people who
make of television, this precious, enormous and grandiose industry! In
México! Truly, this company is one of the most, if not, the most
important company in all of Latin América, and one of the three
most important in the world!
CHAYANNE: It's true! You are a grandiose country! As is TELEVISA! You're
a grandiose country! México
is a country who's given the world plenty in all levels of the industry!
Cinematography, television, music! And
I'm not saying this only because I am here in México and we are
talking about this, but there truly is a lot of
talent here and in all of Latin America, and this latin boom that has
escalated throughout the world is something that couldn't be stopped.
It is here. We are a culture. There are a lot of us. We are going to be
the largest minority in the United States. It is something that is inevitable.
We are hot!
ADAL: We are
..
CHAYANNE: We are hot!
ADAL: We are hot!
CHAYANNE: We are hot!
ADAL: We are hot! And for all those people who are hot, do not change
the channel! We still have two more segments of this program. We're going
to a short break and we'll continue with CHAYANNE!
-BACK FROM THE COMMERCIAL BREAK-
ADAL: We want to tell you that we have a premiere, a great surprise!
To all the girls and guys interested in having one of Chayanne's s videos
that has never been seen anywhere else, and that there is, as of now,
no specific date of release here in América, we have a premiere,
a wonderful surprise! First, let me tell you, get
your vcr's ready, but I want to ask you, Chayanne, before we release it
for the first time, this video hasn't
been seen in América!
CHAYANNE: It hasn't been seen in América! The song was recorded
for the European market as a continuation to the Atado A Tu Amor album.
The video was recorded in Los Angeles, in the Los Angeles
desert, in a dried lake, in a temperature of 110 degrees!
ADAL: That's in Farenheit. What would that temperature be here?
CHAYANNE: I don't know.
ADAL: Approximately 45 degrees!
CHAYANNE: It was extremely hot! Extremely hot! This video was released
in France, in Italy, and all of Europe, as well as a song from this, the
SIMPLEMENTE album, which is the song YO TE AMO. There is
also a video of this song that you'll be able to see pretty soon. But
the video of BOOM BOOM has been
held back until we're ready to release the song.
ADAL: I understand that this video we're going to see, was released via
the internet in Argentina!
CHAYANNE: This video was released via the internet from France, and the
song began to filter through, because the project was done exclusively
for France, and it went from France to Spain
.
ADAL: And a lot of people downloaded it and it became a number one song
in Argentina!
CHAYANNE: It went to the number one spot in Argentina.
ADAL: They would download it!
CHAYANNE: They would download it and then the radio stations began playing
it and it became very successful. But this entire project was meant only
for France and it ended up in many other countries.
ADAL: Well, we are very happy to be the ones to release this video for
the first time, here! It has never been shown anywhere, including the
video channel, TeleHit; and Chayanne, and now that you're here, we'll
release
it! Girls, guys! If you have your vcr's ready, this is a premiere, here
in OTRO ROLLO. This is a video that
was made exclusively for the French market, and is going to be seen for
the first time here. Shall we run the
video in its entirety?
CHAYANNE: Absolutely! BOOM BOOM!
ADAL: BOOM BOOM! Let's watch it!
-THE ENGLISH VERSION OF BOOM BOOM IS PLAYED. WHEN IT ENDS, CHAYANNE CAN
BE SEEN SERIOUSLY EXPLAINING SOMETHING TO ADAL-
ADAL: Listen to this! I'm going to tell you an entire story Chayanne
has just told me! I don't know if this was a mix-up caused by the recording
company, or if it came from our main room, but the version of the video
I was talking about; the one I mentioned was to be a premiere; that was
released only in France, and that from
France went via the internet to Argentina and it reached number one in
Argentina after being downloaded;
it was the Spanish version!
CHAYANNE: That's correct!
ADAL: It was not the English version! So, when the video begins, Chayanne
screams: "NO!"
CHAYANNE: That's not the one!
ADAL: Chayanne says: "That's not the one! They're playing the English
version!" So, I asked him what the problem was! The problem is, that
this version, hasn't been seen anywhere in the world, with the exception
of a presentation you gave in Germany!
CHAYANNE: In Germany, yes!
ADAL: In other words, this is not the one we announced that was done for
the French market! This was a
better premiere than what we expected!
CHAYANNE: This is what happened
.and fortunately, I don't think they
were able to see it very well
ADAL: Explain to us what happened!
CHAYANNE: This is what happened. This song was recorded in Spanish, in
the Los Angeles desert, as I mentioned before.
ADAL: In Spanish only!
CHAYANNE: The video was done in Spanish only! The song was recorded in
English at a later date. I went
to the recording studio, and in fact, this is one of my first compositions
(THE ENGLISH VERSION?) and we went into the studio, we recorded it, we
edited for its release in Europe, this being my first song in English;
they then took the video
.
ADAL: Which was recorded only in Spanish
..
CHAYANNE: Which was recorded only in Spanish, and they began to find the
words in English that most resembled my lip movements in Spanish and then
they added the English words to this video which was
recorded only in Spanish. This video was never recorded in English!
ADAL: So, to summarize this story, in the video we just watched, Chayanne
is, at all times, singing in Spanish, they just replaced the Spanish words,
with the English words.
CHAYANNE: Yes, and the lip synching
the English words
.fit exactly
my lip movement in Spanish. That's technology for you!
ADAL: So, in the video, you turn around and you're saying something in
Spanish and the editors are able to
..how long does it take
..about
a week?
CHAYANNE: No! Much, much longer than that! Just think, you have to go
frame by frame, until you
complete the job.
