-IT’S EVIDENT THAT YOU LOOK FOR, TEND TO AND SWEAT THE RHYTHMS IN YOUR SHOW-
“It’s the only way to continue in the music world, which has been greatly transformed since I started. We are filling stadiums in Latin America, and that’s not counting how well I’ve been received in Europe.”

-IT’S BEEN MORE THAN 20 YEARS…..
“Yes, I’ve had a lot of success with the songs and my tours during the time when cables would stick together. Luis Miguel and I were the young artists. Then followed Emmanuel and Miguel Bosé, who were the young adults; then came Julio Iglesias, José Luis Rodríguez and Camilo Sesto. That’s why, when I sing FUISTE UN TROZO DE HIELO EN LA ESCARCHA or TU PIRATA SOY YO, I think about those who knew me then. I try to travel in time during my shows; I don’t stop singing. Imagine, I now sing DEJARIA TODO and ATADO A TU AMOR.

-HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN SUCCESSFUL?
“I’ve had my low moments. You know that after my separation from Gustavo –the manager with whom he started his career- I stayed away a few years away from the stage while I re-organized myself. We both wanted to do things differently. It is only now that I talk about him after so many years, I usually don’t, he’s like my brother. Man, we were together so many years!”

-SO THEN, YOU DIVIDE YOUR CAREER IN TWO STAGES?
“VOLVER A NACER came after that. After having been on a stand-by, the music panorama changed. Maná, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky, Shakira, Juanes arrived; and each one with their own energy level. It’s another world; look at what the tours are like today. It’s not only the stage; the dancers began appearing from everywhere; there have been many changes.”

-MEN LIKE YOU. THEY DON’T FEEL THREATENED; EVEN WHEN THEIR GIRLFRIENDS WANT TO FALL ALL OVER YOU. I FIND THAT FUNNY-
“I do, too. It’s strange, isn’t it? They see me as a friend. It’s the songs and the show.”

-DOES THE PUBLIC DEMAND YOU DANCE?
“The public wants to see a combination of the video, the artist and the person, but also a show in movement.”

-WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN YOU’RE 55?
“I will dance less (laughter.) I don’t know how I’ll be. I’m going with a normal transition. I hate ridicule.”

-HOW DO YOU FIND THE LIMIT BETWEEN RIDICULE AND AN ARTIST’S FREEDOM?
“I think it’s in you. I’m very shy and when I talk about ridicule, I mean I’m afraid of ridicule. I will go through the normal evolutions. That’s the reason you now see me playing the guitar.”

-EXTREMELY FAMOUS ARTISTS ARE GENERALLY INSECURE. YOU SAY YOU ARE SHY. ARE YOU ALSO INSECURE?
“Yes. I’m a combination of all that; shyness along with the normal insecurities about not wanting to lose what you have. I then ask myself, ‘how far am I willing to go to not lose what I have and still take something new to the people to enjoy?”

-YOU'RE SOMEONE WHO BELIEVES IN LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS: THE SAME MANAGER, THE SAME RECORDING COMPANY, THE SAME WOMAN…
“I’m the little drop that is c-o-n-t-i-n-u-o-u-s-l-y hitting the rock. I’m a Chinese torture. (laughter.)

-ARE YOU AS CHARMING AT HOME, WITH THOSE AROUND YOU?
“Yes, they like me and I like them. I like to protect the people I’m with; that they always be well, happy. I like to surprise them; the flattery of improvising something they like.”

-ARE YOU CREATIVE?
“I am creative. I like to give surprises to make them happy, not for myself, because their happiness is my happiness. I adore my family, I love my children, I like them very much. I’m very happy.”

-IS IT TRUE YOU FELL IN LOVE WITH MARILISA AT FIRST SIGHT?
“Yes, it was a look…and it’s historical, but no one knows it. It was through a crystal, a glass at an airport. When I looked, I saw my own reflection in the glass and then I saw her. Time went on –you know the story- we talked on the phone for months before seeing each other again. I was touring and I didn’t see her often; I got to know her over the telephone, almost like people get to know each other now on the computer. The rest is history.”

-IS YOUR MAMI DOING BETTER?
“Yes, she’s receiving her treatment. It was a blow that took us by surprise. But she has the triangle surrounding her: the family, faith and she and all of us. We are strong believers. And in the medical side, I have some doctors who have been great –I’m very grateful. With these three things, you are stronger emotionally and you have the desire to fight.”

-DO YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN PUERTO RICO WITH HER?
“Before, I would go every time I could, even if it was only for a day or two. We are always in contact through the telephone. December is when we spend a lot of time together.”

-I SAW THAT YOU BOUGHT HER A BEAUTIFUL HOUSE-
“Yes, for mi mami and mi papi, and they love it. They never asked me for anything; we have always been a normal, happy family; with all the things that go on between children and parents.”

-YOU DIDN’T GIVE INTO TEMPTATIONS?
“No, because of the education they gave me, because of the family. Since I was a child, they gave me all the basis and principals, and that stays with you. When the opportunity came around for me to do something bad that could destroy me, I didn’t do it out of respect, because of my principals. My drug was sports.”

-YOUR PLANS?
“I’ve received an offer to do a movie in Puerto Rico. I want to see if I can get ahead in my plans to record a new album. I want to do it –the movie- although it takes a lot of your time.”

-MORE ABOUT THE TOUR-
· He’s not very demanding. He asks for privacy, security, a good gym, good transportation, and a good meal. He likes to try the dishes of the countries he visits.

· He doesn’t travel with a trainer; only with his bodyguard.

· On the days he performs, he only eats chicken or fish and he doesn’t talk much. He doesn’t see anyone before the show.

· For his dressing room, he asks for a sofa, mineral water, a full-length mirror. He asks that the concerts begin on time. When the last song ends, he exits quickly as to not run into traffic.

· At his hotel, he relaxes, takes a shower, eats and analyzes the concert until his adrenaline level comes down.

· He’s not a late sleeper. He gets up at 6:30 to play golf.

· He gets along well with his entire team.

· In long flights and easy days, he enjoys watching movies, reading, talking with the small group he travels with, “fixing the world,” dreaming and always laughing.

· Chayanne is a scolder when something doesn’t turn out well. He’s a perfectionist. He pays attention to everything.”

“He has two children, Lorenzo and Valentina (Isadora) whom he’s been able to keep away from cameras and onlookers. He leads a life so discreet, that we know very little about his dynamic family. His mother has battled cancer for several years.”

Cuando el 2004 termine, Chayanne habra pasado la mayoria del año subido en un avion y en un escenario. Su gira por muchos paises y kilometros ha sido exitosisima. Lo han visto mas de 200,000 personas y eso que falta EE.UU., Centro y Suramerica y algo de Europa; como españa, Turquia,Italia, Portugal, Rumania.

Verlo en accion es un regalo, y aunque no acostumbra recibir a nadie, se sento a platicar con nosotros.

Se nota que buscas, cuidas y sudas los ritmos en tu show...
"Es la unica manera de seguir en el mundo de la musica, que se ha transformado mucho desde que yo empece. Estamos haciendo estadios en Latinoamerica, y no doy credito de lo bien que me ha ido en Europa."

Ya son mas de 20 años....
"Si, tuve mucho exito con las canciones y las giras en los tiempos en que los cables se pegaban. Los artistas jovencitos eramos Luis Miguel y yo; luego Emmanuel y Miguel Bose que eran los adultos jovenes; luego Julio Iglesias, Jose Luis Rodriguez y Camilo Sesto. Por eso cuando canto, Fuiste un trozo de hielo en la escarcha or Tu pirata soy yo es porque pienso en quienes me conocen desde entonces. Trato de viajar en el show, pero no dejo de cantar, imaginate, ahora canto Dejaria todo y Atado a tu amor.

Siempre estas de buenas?
"He tenido momentos bajos. Tu sabes que cuando la separacion con Gustavo- el manager con quien empezo su carrera- estuve unos añitos lejos del escenario mientras me reorganizaba. Cada uno queria hacer cosas diferentes. Ahora es que vengo a hablar de el despues de muchos años, porque no lo hago, es como mi hermano. Coño, estuvimos juntos muchisimos años!."

Entonces divides tu carrera en dos etapas?
"Luego vino "Volver a nacer. Despues de haber estado en stand by, cambio el panorama musical. Estaban Mana, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky, Shakira, Juanes, y cada quien con un volumen de energia. Es otro mundo, mira como son ahora las giras. No solo es el escenario, los bailarines empezaron a salir por todos lados; ha habido muchos cambios".

A los hombres les caes bien, no se sientes amenazados, aunque las novias quieran caerte encima. Eso me da risa...
"A mi tambien, es raro. No? Me ven como amigo. Son las canciones y el show".

La gente te exige bailar?
"La gente quiere ver una combinacion del video, el artista y la persona, pero tambien un show en movimiento".

Que va a pasar cuando tengas 55 años?
"Bailare menos (risa). No se como estare. Voy con la transicion normal, odio el ridiculo".

Donde esta el limite entre el ridiculo y las libertades de un artista?
"Creo que esta en uno. Yo soy timido y cuando digo del ridiculo. Voy a tener las evoluciones normales... Por eso ves que ahora toco la guitarra".

Los artista super famosos son generalmente inseguros; tu dices que eres timido, inseguro tambien?
"Si. Tengo una combinacion de todo eso. La timidez unto con las inseguridades normales de no querer perder lo que tienes. Entonces pienso: hasta donde llego para no peerder lo que tengo y llevar cosas nuevas y que la gente disfrute?".

Eres un tipo de relaciones a largo plazo: la misma manager; la misma compañia de discos, la misma mujer...
"Soy una gota que estoy dando en la piedra cons-tan-te-mente. Soy una tortura china(risa)".

Eres tan encantador en tu casa, con los que te rodean?
"Si, les caigo bien y ellos a mi. Me gusta proteger a la gente con la que estoy, que siempre esten bien felices. Sorprenderlos. La coqueteria de improvisar algo que pueda gustarles".

Eres creativo?
"Soy creativo, me gusta dar sorpresas para su felicidad, no para la mia, porque su felicidad es mi felicidad. Adoro a los mios, amo a mis niños, me encantan. Soy muy feliz".

Es sierto que te enamorastes de Marilissa a primera vista?
"Si, fue una mirada... y es historica, pero o la sabe nadies. Fue a traves de un cristal, de un vidrio en un aeropuerto. Cuando yo miro, veo el reflejo de uno de los cristales y despuesd es que la veo a ella. Paso un tiempo-tu conoces la historia-pasaron meses hablandonos por telefono antes de volvernos a ver. Yo estaba en gira y no la veia mucho; fui conociendola por telefono, casi como se conocen hoy en computadora. Lo demas es historia".

Tu mami esta mejor?
"Si, esta haciendose su tratamiento. Fue un golpe que nos tomo de sorpresa. Pero ella tiene el triangulo:la familia, la fe, ella y todos nosotros somos muy creyentes, y la parte de la medicina. Tengo unos medicos que se han protado super bien- que se los agradezco- Con estas tres cosas, emocionalmente, estas mas fuerte y tienes ganas de luchar".

Pasa mucho tiempo en Puerto Rico con ella?
"Antes me iba cada vez que podia, aunque fuera un dia o dos. Telefonicamente siempre estamos en contacto. En diciembre es cuando pasamos mucho tiempo juntos....".

Ya vi que le comprastes una casa linda.
"Si, a mami y a papi y estan encantados. Nunca me pidieron nada, siempre hemos sido una familia feliz, normal, con las coasa de los hijos y los padres".

No te torciste con las tentaciones....
"No, por la educacion que me dieron, por la familia. De chiquito me dieron todas las bases y los pricipios y eso se me quedo. Cuando estaba la oportunidad de hacer algo malo que podia destruirme, no lo hacia por respeto, por principio. Mi droga era el deporte".

Planes?
"Tendo la propuesta de hacer cine en Puerto Rico. A ver si adelanto algo para grabar un nuevo disco. Quiero hacerlo, aunque te roba mucho tiempo".

Mas Sobre La Gira
~No es exingente:pide privacidad, seguridad, un buen gimnasio, transporte como y buena comida, le gusta probar la comida delpais que visita.

~No viaja con entrenador, solo con el guarda espaldas.

~El dia que canta, solo come pollo o pescado y casi no habla. No recibe a nadie, antes del show.

~En el camerino pide; sofa, agua sin gas, espejo de cuerpo completo. Que los conciertos empiecen a tiempo. Cuando termina la ultima conacion, sale rapidamente para no encontrarse con el transito.

~En su hotel: se relaja, toma un baño, come y analiza el concierto hasta que su nivel de adrenalina baja.

~No es dormilon, se le vana a las 6:30 para jugar al golf.

~Selleva bien con to su equipo.

~Se distrae en vuelos largos y dias tranquilos, viendo peliculas, leyendo, hablando con el pequeño grupo que viaja, "arrenglando el mundo", so4ando y todo el tiempo riendose.

~Chayanne es regañon cuando algo no esta bien. Es perfeccionista. Se da cuenta de todo.
