CHAYANNE - THE FAMOUS SMILE

Chayanne arrived in Viña preceded by polls that identify him as the festival’s most popular artist. Good looks, charisma and artistic talent have transformed him into one of the most important stars in the Hispanic music world. That is why it wasn’t a surprise when the organizing committee decided that the Puerto Rican artist would participate in the final stage of the festival, after Rod Stewart decided not to travel to Chile. A sure bet.

With his already famous smile, Chayanne receives us in Santiago, previously to his trip to Viña del Mar. He keeps his appointments and he’s punctual. We let him know.

“I believe I inherited it from my father. He taught us that one has to be respectful and responsible, and work very hard,” Chayanne explained.

He’s as fresh as a lettuce; the eight hours of air travel don’t seem to have left a print on his body nor in his temperament. He’s always so pleasant. Shy, as he acknowledges; he shows, nevertheless, an incredible audacity when it comes to work. Not only does he sing, he also acts in movies and television series. There is Provócame, the Argentine television series where he co-stars with Araceli González, that will soon air in Chile on Channel 13, and that created more than one rumor about a romance with the good looking actress. He says his wife, Marilisa Maronese, is not a jealous person; that she completely understands that those type of rumors are “parts of the trade.”

“She’s used to these comments of a romance they attribute to us. The same thing happened with Vanessa Williams.” -With whom he starred in the movie, Dance With Me. “They always publish those type of things to generate doubts….they wonder if there’s something going on because you go out to dinner with your colleague or because you smiled at her; but she –his wife- understands.” He adds, “When things like this happen, we talk about it when I get home at night, but we don’t need to call each other because we have doubts. She’s very sure of herself. Obviously, there is some natural jealousy, on my part also, but it’s not an unhealthy jealousy; it’s harmless.” He feels his marriage is stable. “My marriage comes before anything. I tend to it like a garden, watering it everyday.” As a father, it’s very important to him that his children, Lorenzo Valentino and Isadora Sofía, “live in a peaceful and united family environment.”

After 23 years of career (he began singing with the group Los Chicos at age 10) Chayanne clearly knows what he wants. “Like I said, family comes first, their peace of mind; then comes my career, that fortunately, has diversified with my participation in movies and on American television series like Ally McBeal.” He says that in the movies, he likes roles that have meaning and are not full of vulgarity. “I love romantic comedies; something that includes movement and feelings. Something that can be watched by the entire family.”

WOULD YOU APPEAR NUDE IN THE MOVIES?

(HE LAUGHS OUTLOUD) “Only if there is plenty of shadows, plenty of shadows; so much, so that they couldn’t see me. No, I don’t think I would do it.”

WHAT TURNS YOU ON MORE, A DIRECT PROVOCATION OR AN INSINUATION?

“A combination of both. I think one follows the other. Insinuation is the first step in the game of seduction. But it doesn’t lead anywhere if it’s not followed by provocation.”

WHAT IS YOUR ACHILLES’ HEEL? (WEAKNESSES)

“Kisses, caresses on your back, the heat of the skin, many things.”

WHAT TYPE OF UNDER CLOTHES DO YOU LIKE?

“Something comfortable and suggestive.”

AND FOR HER?

“Lace is very beautiful, during the first moment. After that, I like her to dispose of everything to be able to discover the truth in every inch of her body.”

HOW IS A WOMAN ABLE TO SEDUCE YOU?

“By delicate flirting; with a look, and with her lips while speaking. A woman who makes you think that behind the sweet girl, exists a wild creature.”

AND HOW DO YOU SEDUCE A WOMAN?

“I don’t know. By being myself, perhaps. They possibly expect to see someone more serious because of my success, but I’m very spontaneous and I think that is what they like.”

HOW ARE CHAYANNE’S KISSES?

“At first, sweet, and as time passes, they become more wild. I wish people could see my face while I’m answering this question; they would understand very well what I mean.”

WHAT EXCITES YOU MORE ABOUT THE OPPOSITE SEX?

“Femininity. I always say a seductive woman doesn’t necessarily have to be beautiful. But she needs to know how to use her feminine side. Personally, I like the independent type; with a strong personality and self reliance; the type who doesn’t need a man as a charm.”

AND WHEN IT COMES TO PHYSICAL APPEARANCE?

“I admit a certain weakness for blondes. My favorite was always Kim Bassinger, although Michelle Pfeiffer also holds a special attraction for me. When it comes to brunettes, Demi Moore stood out. I died when I saw her in the movie, Striptease.”

WHEN IT COMES TO LOVE, ARE YOU COLD OR ARDENT?

“I think it’s good to compliment both things. It’s all right to be cold, but with a lot of passion.”

DO YOU USE A STRATEGY TO WIN THE WOMAN YOU WANT?

“More than a strategy, I have a game. A smile, a certain look. You can say many things with the eyes. When I like someone, I can’t nor try to hide it. But I first study the situation and make sure that the attraction is mutual, so as to not force things. In that sense, I’m like a shark, I ambush my prey and only attack when I feel it’s safe.”

HAVE THEY SAID NO TO YOU, SOMETIMES?

“Not many.”

“WOULD YOU DARE TO CONFESS A SEXUAL FANTASY?

“Sometimes I picture myself flying aimlessly around the world in a hot air balloon; and up there, only she and I, with a cold bottle of champagne.”

HOW ARE YOU AS A LOVER?

“I consider myself a passionate person. I enjoy my wife. I like everything about her. The way she talks, the way she laughs, the way she feels. In love, I give myself body and soul.”

WITHOUT LIMITS?

“Without any type of limits.”
